Old School Thinking is Ruining Your AC

Your AC unit is more complex than you give it credit for.  Just like you, your AC unit can encounter health issues that place intense strain on its energy.  A properly functioning AC pulls moisture out of the air and disposes of it through the drain line.  When the unit isn’t properly cleaned, or cheap ineffective filters are used, debris floods in and clogs the condensation drain line.

Nowhere Left to Go

Rather than disposing of the debris and condensation outside of the building, the drain line locks them into the system.  This waste pools at the bottom of the central unit and circulates through the ductwork and HVAC, spewing waste into the air throughout your property.

Property managers and HVAC companies alike suggest dealing with this debris and subsequent mold growth by pouring bleach into the moisture tray monthly.  This is intended to dissolve buildup.  However, microbes evolve quickly to develop resistance to bleach; many spores are bleach resistant before they even reach your system, as their strain has been exposed to it previously.  This is no different than bacteria developing resistance to antibiotics.  Not to mention, do you really want bleach circulating in your air?

Get with the Times

The bleach solution is old school thinking and is unlikely to result in long term improvements.  Mold can develop new variants every six months.  As such, the best way to get rid of it is to prevent it in the first place.  Use quality filters and thoroughly clean your system regularly, especially the condensation drain.  If the plumbing doesn’t work, the waste can only be held inside and circulate harmfully to you and anyone in contact with your property - family, friends, and guests.

An air conditioning unit is exposed outside the home, vulnerable to harmful weather impacts when improperly cared for.

Your AC unit isn’t just a machine for your home comfort. It’s a connection from the inside out. If this connection isn’t well-maintained, it can bring pollutants and toxins in from outside and can lock waste inside.
